Flood Damages in Laos

The recent floods in Laos had destroyed over 65,000 hectares of farmland in 295 villages and affected more than 200,000 people in 679 villages of 53 districts, including 25 poorest districts.

The Lao cabinet meeting for the month of August concluded that the floods also destroyed 128 irrigation systems, more than 2,000 fish ponds, bridges and roads in 12 provinces, including major roads such as route 13, 9, 8, 7, 1, 12 and 18. Lao officials say more than 300 billion kips is needed to repair these roads and bridges.

The recent floods, the worst since 1966, had also destroyed more than 27,000 hectares of rice field which will make it difficult for Laos to achieve production target of 2.8 tons for 2008.
