The Ministry of Public Health and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Laos had jointly hosted a conference to improve capabilities in a response to bird flu threat in humans.
Dr. Bounkouang Phichit, the Deputy of Public Health Ministry said that this conference is an opportunity for Lao and foreign officials involved to review the strategic plan to fight against bird flu already in place.
At the conference, Mr. Ravic Huso, US Ambassador to Laos had provided more than 7.4 million dollars in assistance, to use in this strategic plan for the period 2 years. The US Ambassador also gave some communication equipments and 2,000 anti-bird flu suites to Laos to improve its bird flu prevention and control, worth more than 24,000 dollars.
The World Health Organization says more than 200 people have died abound the world from the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu since 2003 including 2 people in Laos.
