Lao authorities say they will step up efforts to solve the problem of not having enough schools for children and students by building more vocational schools throughout the country, and supporting private schools and encouraging them to expand.
Official statistics show over 42,000 students finished secondary schools in Laos in the 2005-07 academic year, but national universities can take in only some 20,000 of those students, forcing the rest into an underdeveloped work force that cannot accomodate them all.
The Lao PDR has some 8,470 elementary schools, with approximately 28,758 teachers teaching some 891,000 students, or about 86.4% of all school-aged children in the country.
