Laos: Enforcement of State Inspection Law Will Improve Government Efficiency

Lao authorities express confidence that the imminent enforcement of state inspection laws, recently approved by the National Assembly, will improve work efficiency and accountability in all levels of the government.

Laos National Assembly President Thongsing Thammavong acknowledges problems and inefficiencies in all areas and echelons of government due to lack of skilled personnel, duplication of duties, unaccountability, and lack of coordination, and unaccountability, among the various governmental departments, among other things.

The International Transparency organization reports that the lack of inspection and oversight of all the grants and loans provided to Laos by the international communities has resulted in a 25% loss.

According to Laos' Finance Ministry statistics, Laos received over 2,385 millions in foreign assistance between 1975-1985, and over six billions between 1986-2006.
