Laos: Measures to Mitigate Environmental Impacts of Nam Theun 2 Meet International Standards

Laos officials say the works to reduce the impacts of the Nam Theun 2 hydro-power dam construction on the environment and the villagers in the construction and downstream areas have been carried out according to international standards.

The NT2 investment group has to evacuate over 1,200 households from 16 villages from the the Nakai Plateau in Khammouane Province to make room for a 450 km2 reservoir that will power the 1,070 MW dam. It also has to work on reducing the impacts on over 300-thousand villagers living downstream along the banks of the Xe Bang Fai river. The investors say they will build a flood deterrent system, an irrigation system, and a water refinery where the water going through the power- generating plant will be treated before flowing into the Xe Bang Fai.
