Laos: Difficult to Completely Stop Transnational Labor Smuggling

Lao authorities acknowledge that it is difficult to completely stop illegal labor trade between Thailand and Laos, because it is not carried out by just one organized criminal group, but by many small gangs who smuggle only a few at a time.

Laos spokesman Yong chanthalangsy said the only way to curb this illegal trade is to raise awareness of its danger by spreading words about its adverse consequences.

By Thai estimates, there are currently over 300-thousand workers from Laos in Thailand. Of that number, only about 80-thousands have properly registered with Thai authorities while the number of illegal workers keeps increasing.
