The Lao government has set up a special task force to monitor mining investors' compliance with the rules and regulations specified in the contracts.
Lao officials say they have so far approved some 118 projects to explore and mine for verious metals in Laos. Licenses have been issued to some 66 companies, 33 of each are 100% foreign-owned.
But of the approved 118 projects, only 36 have started exploring and mining. Therefore, the need for a special task force to monitor compliances.
