Laos Compensates Bird Flu-Affected Poultry Farmers

The Lao government has provided monetary compensation to poultry farmers whose livestock was lost to bird flu in July of last year. The compensation covered about 70% of the farmers' losses.

Laos lost over 200,000 chickens to two outbreaks of bird flu in late 2004 and mid 2006. To prevent future outbreaks of the deadly H5N1 virus, the government started a campaign to raise awareness of the Avian flu danger among its people, especially among ethnic groups such as the Hmongs and the Khmus.
