Laos Cracks Down on Poultry Smuggling from Neighboring Countries

As preventive measures against possible future bird flu outbreaks, Lao authorities prohibit poultry and egg imports and are cracking down hard on merchants who smuggle them from neighboring countries that are facing bird flu outbreaks, namely Thailand, Vietnam, and China.

Laos sufferred another Avian flu outbreak last year, the second since 2004, and is still unable to produce enough poultry and eggs to meet domestic demands.

The three provinces hard hit by the outbreaks are Vientiane, Savannakhet and Champassack.
