Thailand Says Illegal Workers from Laos, Burma, and Cambodia Can Work in Southern Provinces

Thai authorities say illegal workers from Laos, Kampuchea, and Myanmar will be allowed to remain and work in Thailand, but they must work in five southern provinces only.

The unregistered foreign workers must apply for work with the employment agencies of those provinces, namely Songkla, Patthalung, and the three restive provinces, Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat. And they have until June 30th to do so.

Thai officials also say those who have legally registered with Thai authorities will be permitted to work for another year. There is an estimated 660,000 registered workers from Laos, Kampuchea, and Myanmar in Thailand. Around 90,000 are from Laos, out of the estimated total 400,000.
