The second outbreak of bird flu in Laos has not only widely affected the price and consumption of poultry in that communist nation, but has also made an impact on the government’s policy and plan to develop and increase food production to produce enough food supply to meet domestic demands.
The bird flu outbreaks have affected some 40 poultry farms in three provinces, namely Vientiane, Savannakhet, and Champassack. Over 10,000 poultries were culled to prevent the spread of the virus H5N1, forcing many farms to close down and resulting in higher prices for poultry.
