The Lao PDR and the United Nations last week signed an agreement in the capital city of Vientiane to strengthen the country's legal and law enforcement institutions in an effort to combat transnational human trafficking.
Recent study results show that Lao girls aged between 12 and 18 years are most likely to fall victims of human trafficking in Laos. They make up 60% of all cases, 35% of which end up in prostitution in neighboring Thailand.
The UN assistance, totaling some $440,000, is made possible by contributions by donors of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime(UNODC).
