The first railway linking Laos and Thailand is approaching reality with the recent signing of an MOU between Laos, Thailand, and France pledging continued cooperation on the project with construction to begin in October and completion expected in 2009.
The first phase, the track from Nongkhai over the Friendship Bridge to Tha Naleng, a distance of 3.5 Km, will be built with a 197 million Baht-aid from Thailand while the second phase, a 10 km distance from Tha Naleng to Baan Sokkham in Saythani District, will be built with joint assistance from Thailand and France in the amount of $20 million.
