The July 4th celebration is a proud way to live and show off the true meaning of American living. This celebration is a display of not only a patriotic feeling for this young, strong and leading nation, but also the true meaning of living in liberty, freedom and democracy.
People throughout the United States of America celebrate this important day with outdoor activities, picnic and firecrakers. Official celebrations include parades and concerts by famous artists, ending with dazzling fireworks.
The Laotian-American community in the
Washington area has its unique way of celebrating the fourth of July. This annual celebration has become a way of life for Laotian-Americans , living in their new land - America. This grand annual celebration, combined with a Buddhist ceremony,
usually takes places in the first weekend of July in line with July fourth in order to make it easier for people to get together.
Mr. Somphone Sayasithsena, president of the July 4th Annual Celebration explained to VOA that… ”The July 4th annual celebration at Wat Lao Bhudhavong of Washington DC, under the leadership of Phra Ajan Bounmy Thammavanhno and Phra Ajan Chanhdaphone Chakkavaro has brought together thousands of people around the globe to celebrate the American Independence Day. And this year's celebration is more meaningful because we are also celebrating Prabang of Luang Prabang Laos.”
He also added “This celebration has been adopted to be a part of the Laotian diaspora’s activities, particularly in the United States.” Wat Lao Buddhavong of Washington DC is not only a center of Buddhist Religion, but is also a gathering place for
Laotian Americans and all Buddhist followers as a whole.
This year's event took place on Saturday July 1, and Sunday July 2. The highlight of the celebration was an outdoor concert that brought together many singers from Laos and Thailand.
This is a unique way to celebrate the fourth of July - music, foods and fun.
