Laos Today: Thailand Agrees in Principle to Buy More Electricty from Laos

Thailand's Energy Minister says his government has agreed in principle to increase electricity purchase from Laos from 3,000 MW to 5,000 MW by 2010 to meet domestic demands which have been growing at an average rate of 7% annually.

Thailand's estimated overall energy needs will increase from 21,000 MW to 34,000 MW by the year 2015, which Laos alone cannot supply. So, looking to China as another energy source, Thai, Lao, and Chinese officials are discussing the possibility of building transmission lines to link the three countries.
