Laos Today: Thailand Extends Registration for Illegal Workers from Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar

Thai authorities have extended registration period for illegal workers from Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar for another month. The Thai cabinet also agreed to abolish the penalty or fine, set between 10,000 to 50,000 Bahts for each unregistered worker caught.

Illegal workers from the three countries now have until the end of June to register and receive permission to work in Thailand for another year. To do so, they will have to pay about 4,300 Bahts for registration and other fees.

Meanwhile, Lao authorities in Savannakhet acknowledge that it is difficult for them to prevent workers from going to Thailand to look for work because of the economic situation in their province.
