Laos Today: Over 570 Mineral Deposits Discovered in Laos

A recently-concluded survey of Laos' mineral resources reveals over 570 mineral deposits with possible economic viability throughout the country. The survey which lasted over a year was undertaken by the Lao Ministry of Industry and Handicrafts with the help of Chinese experts.

The survey found deposits of gold, silver, copper, iron, lead, zinc, gypsum, and lignite among other things. Officials caution, however, that more surveys and studies are needed to verify the economic viability and the exact amounts of deposits.

Lao authorities say currently over 90 private companies have undertaken mineral surveys in Laos. 34 of which are 100% foreign-owned while the rest is joint-ventures .
