Laotians in the Lao PDR begin to celebrate Lao New Year today, April 13, while Americans of Lao descent across the U.S. are making preparations for big celebrations on the weekend for the sake of conveniency.
Celebrations are usually held at community Lao temples. VOA interviews members of three temples about their upcoming festivities.
The head of the Association of Lao Buddhist Monks in the U.S., Phra Achan Bounkong Singsouvanh of Wat Lao in Honolulu, Hawaii, explains to VOA the significance of the Lao New Year celebration, while Achan Chandaphone Mingsisouphanh of Wat Lao Buddhavong of the Washington DC metropolitan area discusses his temple's planned activities, which include concerts featuring well-known singers from across the U.S. as well as the Lao PDR and Thailand.
