Lao officials say the major educational achievement of the past 30 years has been the increase in literacy rate, which has jumped to 70% from 30% in 1975, with big increases in the numbers of schools and students at all levels.
At the same time, the officials acknowledge that insufficient budgets and lack of human resources are the major problems and obstacles affecting the educational development of Laos, creating the biggest educational opportunity gap for Lao youth in urban and rural areas.
