France and Thailand have agreed in principle to help Laos build a railway linking the Tha Naleng port to the capital Vientiane. The agreement was reached during a recent visit to Thailand by French President Jacques Chirac. A French official says a feasibility study will begin in the next few weeks.
The project would be a continuation of the railway that is being built from Thailand over the Friendship Bridge and connecting to Tha Naleng port. Thailand is funding the 197- million Baht project. 30% of which is a grant while the rest is a long-term loan.
