Thai experts say sex trade is the major cause of the rising spread of the HIV-AIDS virus in Laos, especially in the border areas with Thailand. Meanwhile, Lao officials say a recent random blood tests of over 30,000 Lao people reveals that 1,636 are HIV infected, and 30% of that number is female.
The experts say in Pakse, some Lao girls are lured or forced to provide sex services to patrons of local karaoke bars, and that many cross the border to Chong Mek on the Thai side to visit clinics.
