01/26/06 World news in Lao: Palestinian Cabinet Resigns, Hamas Winning Parliamentary Majority


The cabinet of Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia has resigned, after the Islamic militant group Hamas' apparent victory in Wednesday's parliamentary elections.

The U.S. military in Iraq says it is releasing more than 400 Iraqi detainees, including five women prisoners.

The lawyer for Chinese journalist Li Changqing says his client has been sentenced to three years in prison on charges of spreading false and alarmist information.

Indonesian officials have postponed indefinitely a meeting between President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and East Timor President Xanana Gusmao. The meeting had been scheduled for Friday.

India is celebrating its Republic Day with military parades in major cities.
