Laos Today: Laos Vows to Increase Literacy Rate to 74% in 2006


The Lao government acknowledges that its efforts to eradicate illiteracy among the Lao people through educational developments have met with utmost difficulties.

Nevertheless, government officials vow to eradicate illiteracy among 50,000 people, aged 15 and up, in their socio-economic development plan for 2005-06, and to expand educational opportunities to more youngsters under the age of ten.

The government hopes to bring the literacy rate up to 74% across the nation.
