Laos Today: Laos and Four Other ACMECS Members Agree to Strengthen Cooperation on Controlling Bird Flu

Members of the Ayrawady Chao Phraya Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy grouping sign an agreement on a comprehensive cooperation in controlling the Avian flu.

Meeting in their second ACMECS summit in Bangkok earlier this month, the five members - Laos, Thailand, Burma, Cambodia, and Vietnam - identified public health as a new area for cooperation, agreeing to strengthen cooperation on surveillance and information-sharing on bird flu, with Thailand pledging $2.5 million to help its neighbors get ready to tackle a possible bird flu pandemic.

The five partners also pledged continued cooperation in five other important areas: trade and investment facilitation; agricultural and industrial cooperation; regional transport linkages; tourism; and human resources development.
