Special Report: Laos Gets U.S. Funds for Bird Flu

Laos will receive more than three million dollars from the United States to fight bird flu after the two countries signed a cooperation agreement on Thursday. US Secratary for Health and Human Services Michael Leavitt and Laos Health Minister Ponmek Dalaloy signed the agreement after meeting in Vientiane to discuss ways of combatting the spread of the virus.

The 3.4 million dollars in aid will be used to control outbreaks and help the communist nation stop a possible pandemic. The agreement also includes a plan to develop diagnostic laboratories, boost responses to bird flu cases and promote reporting of outbreaks in remote areas of the mountainous country.
