08/17/05 Israeli Troops Begin Evicting Remaining Settlers from Gaza


The Israeli army has begun forcibly evicting Jewish settlers from the Gaza Strip, after a deadline for them to voluntarily leave the territory expired. Hundreds of soldiers and police entered several settlement blocs today and began dragging settlers on to buses to be taken out of Gaza.

Iraqi authorities say three car bombs exploded within minutes of each other in central Baghdad today (Wednesday), killing at least 43 people and wounding more than 75 others. Meanwhile, Iraqi political leaders are continuing efforts to draft a new constitution after parliament voted Monday to extend a deadline for producing the document by one week.

Australians are angered by today's (Wednesday's) decision by Indonesia to reduce the jail sentence of a militant Muslim cleric convicted for playing a role in the deadly 2002 bombings on Bali island.
