08/15/05 World News: Indonesia, Aceh Rebels, Sign Peace Pact


The government of Indonesia and rebels from Aceh province signed a peace agreement in Helsinki, Finland today (Monday), ending 30 years of conflict.
The historic agreement calls for the withdrawal of government forces from the region and the disarming of rebels in a bid to end decades of bloodshed that left 15-thousand people dead.

Israeli armed forces are delivering

eviction notices today (Monday) to

Jewish settlers in the Gaza Strip,

setting in motion Israel's withdrawal

from the Palestinian territory.

Malaysia has deployed 125 firefighters to Indonesia's Sumatra Island to help battle hundreds of blazes that have cloaked the region in a choking haze.

At least four people have died in northern Thailand, where flash flooding took the region by surprise Saturday.
