07/06/05 World News: Rice to Skip ASEAN Summit in Laos


President Bush says he recognizes that human activity contributes to global climate change, but restated his opposition to the Kyoto accord on the issue.

London will host the 2012 Summer Olympics. The International Olympic Committee selected the British capital at its meeting in Singapore today (Wednesday).

The U.S. State Department says Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will travel to Asia at the end of this week for visits to China, Thailand, South Korea, and Japan.

The State Department also confirmed Ms. Rice will break recent precedent and not attend annual talks with Southeast Asian foreign ministers later this month in Laos. Instead, Deputy Secretary of State Robert Zoellick will attend the meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), July 24 through 29 in the Laotian capital of Vientiane.

A Thai policeman has been beheaded in the southern province of Pattani, one of three provinces plagued by 18 months of sectarian violence.

Thailand's deputy commerce minister has resigned over allegations of fraud in his family's cooking gas company.
