07/03/05 World News: Egypt's Ambassador Kidnapped in Iraq


Egypt's ambassador to Iraq has been kidnapped in Baghdad, just weeks after he arrived in the war-torn country.
Egyptian diplomats say Ambassador Ihab al-Sherif was kidnapped late Saturday in the Iraqi capital. No details have been announced officially, but (according to Reuters) one Egyptian envoy said Mr. al-Sherif had stopped to buy a newspaper when two cars filled with gunmen pulled up and abducted him.

Officials in Saudi Arabia say al-Qaida's leader in the kingdom has been killed in a shootout with Saudi police in Riyadh.

The U.S. space agency's "Deep Impact" spacecraft successfully launched its impact probe early today (Sunday) for the final dive and explosion into the center of the comet.
