Lao authorities acknowledge a steady increase in the use of amphetamines among students, saying a random urine test of over 14,000 students throughout the country reveals a jump from 3.7% in 2003 to the current 27.6%. They also say the abuse has spread from urban to rural areas, and that Laos has increasingly become a transit route for transnational drug traffickers.
