The number of new coronavirus cases has dropped in the center of the outbreak, China, but has risen in South Korea -- the hardest-hit country outside China.
China's National Health Commission reported 327 new cases and 44 deaths early Friday -- the lowest number of new cases in more than a month.
But the number in South Korea has surpassed 2,000 with 256 new cases and 13 deaths. Most of the cases are in Daegu, the South's fourth largest city.
In the United States officials are reporting the first coronavirus case of "unknown origin," meaning the female victim in northern California did not travel outside the U.S. or come in contact with anyone who is infected.
Although President Donald Trump says the risk of catching the virus in the United States is very low, California health officials say they have launched a "robust" effort to reach out to the "many, many individuals in all walks of this person's life." Coronavirus is highly transmittable to others.
The head of the World Health Organization Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, says the outbreak outside China, where the virus emerged in December, is his "greatest concern."
"If you acted aggressively now, you can contain the virus. You can prevent people getting sick. You can save lives," Tedros said.
At least 40 countries are reporting cases, and governments in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East are taking some extraordinary steps to contain the virus.
The United States and South Korea called off joint military drills. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has ordered schools to close at least through March.
New Zealand reported its first confirmed case of COVID-19 Friday.Nigeria, Lithuania and Estonia have also now reported cases of the virus
Saudi Arabia has yet to report any cases, but is taking the unusual step of banning, for now, foreigners from making the pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca -- which all able-bodied Muslims are expected to do at least once in their lives.
"We ask God almighty to spare all humanity from all harm," the foreign ministry said Thursday.
The Smelka border between Syria and Iraq, which is controlled by Kurdish forces on both sides, has been closed until further notice because of the virus.
In Geneva, U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet warned against discrimination linked to the virus.
"The coronavirus epidemic has set off a disturbing wave of prejudice against people of Chinese and East Asian ethnicity, and I call on member states to do their most to combat this and other forms of discrimination."
As of Friday, there were more than 83,000 coronavirus cases worldwide and more than 2,800 deaths. Most of the cases are in China.
