Laos Is Confident It Will Be Opium-Free by End of 2005 - 2005-01-04


Laos' top drug official again expresses confident that, based on past performances, his country will successfully implement its plan to free its land of opium cultivation by the end of this year.

Since 1998, Laos has been able to reduce opium fields from over 26,000 hectares to slightly over 3,500 hectares now. In the 2004-05 fiscal year alone. about 4,000 hectares were cleared of opium plants.
