UNHCR Urges Transparency from Laos and Thailand on Hmong Issue

Ly Seu, leader of the Huay Nam Khao Hmong community in Thailand’s Phetchaboun province, say more Hmongs want to escape Laos to Thailand because of hunger and persecution. He says there are approximately 25,000 Hmongs in Laos who are dying of famine because they are surrounded by government troops.

Meanwhile, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees urges both the Lao and Thai governments to maintain a transparent approach in screening the Hmong refugees for deportation. The UNHCR expressed concerns that some refugees may have legitimate humanitarian reasons for fleeing Laos.
