Toui: There were almost 50,000 people at that camp. Caty: Oh that’s small compared to Dadaab refugee camp in Kenya. Let’s watch a video about life there. Play video Zam Zam Omar says she used to hear rosy stories about life in refugee camps in Kenya. Omar is among nearly 100,000 refugees who have fled to Kenya to escape drought and conflict in Somalia. But because Kenya has banned the registration of new refugees at the crowded Dadaab camp, new arrivals have had to live in temporary settlements outside the camp with limited amenities. The Kenyan government has periodically threatened to close the Dadaab camps entirely. But now, to ease congestion, the Kenyan government has approved the re-opening of two sub-camps that were closed in 2016 -- Ifo 2 and Kambioos. Toui: Good that the Kenyan government didn’t close that camp. What is registration, Caty? Caty: A register is a written record containing regular entries of items or details. So, a refugee registration would have names, birthplaces and other information about each refugee officially documented. Toui: How about settlement? Caty: It’s a place where people come to live. Toui: What about congestion? Caty: It is a situation in which a place is so crowded it causes problems. Coming to work today I encountered congestion on the road. A traffic jam! Toui: Perfect.
