Sabaidee Caty! Sabaidee Toui! Toui: What are you planning to do this weekend? Caty: My sister and I going for a hike in the Blue Ridge mountains. How about you? Toui: I’m going to take my family kayaking on the Potomac River. Caty: That will be a blast. Have you ever kayaked on the Anacostia River? Toui: No, I heard it’s not so clean, right? Caty: It is not fully clean yet. But it’s health is improving thanks to groups like the one in this video. Toui: Okay! Play Video Rivers are so important to not only the habitat, animals, and natural environment, but also to people. Rivers are typically where we get our drinking water. ((NATS)) I’ve been involved with environmental restoration work almost my whole life, and all of that’s led me here, having worked on a whole plethora of projects all across the world. ((NATS)) ((Jim Foster, Anacostia Watershed Society)) I was motivated to come here and work on the Anacostia because I love clean water. ((Jim Foster, Anacostia Watershed Society)) There is almost a million people that live in our watershed. And so, we have a much higher density. We’ve really pushed the limits on what we have done to this watershed. So, we are out of balance here, but we are working hard to bring it back. Toui: That’s great. What does habitat mean? Caty: It is the natural environment that supports the life within it. Like a whale’s habitat is the ocean. Toui: What about plethora? Caty: It means a very large amount…even more than needed, perhaps. Toui: How about watershed? Caty: It’s an area of high ground from which water flows down to a river.
