Local Motors

Divergent Microfactories

Divergent

While carmakers are still struggling with self-driving technology, another part of the auto industry is quickly advancing towards maturity. As VOA's George Putic reports, 3D printing of car bodies promises to produce lighter and cheaper vehicles with much smaller carbon footprint than regular cars.

Today's cars are manufactured like this, a process that require large amounts of energy and manpower.

But enthusiasts say very soon, building a mass-produced car may begin like this.

((JOHN B. ROGERS JR. CEO OF LOCAL MOTORS))
"You start with a digital file that you put into a printer and the printer prints out the rough shape of the car."

For this prototype called Strati, manufactured by Arizona's Local Motors, granules of plastic reinforced with carbon fibers are melted and extruded in layers.

The process is still slow, but it is cheaper, requires less manpower and has a lower carbon footprint than today's conventional approach.

California-based Divergent Microfactories went a step further.

The body of its sports car, called Blade, is made of printed metal components, that can be assembled in minutes with connecting carbon-reinforced rods.

((KEVIN CZINGER, CEO OF DIVERGENT MICROFACTORIES))
"3D printing of metal radically changes that. By looking at 3D printing not for that overall structure but to create individual modular structures that can be combined, that 3D printing transforms everything."

Powering 3D-printed cars with less polluting propulsion, such as electricity or natural gas, further reduces their carbon footprint. They are also lighter than regular cars.

((BRAD BALZER, DIVERGENT MICROFACTORIES CHIEF DESIGNER))
"The 3D-printed chassis is only 102 pounds (46 kg) and has the same strength and safety protection as a frame made out of steel."

The first prototypes are often designed in the shape of sports vehicles.

((BRAD BALZER, DIVERGENT MICROFACTORIES CHIEF DESIGNER))
"We focused a lot on the aesthetics of this car because it is very important to capture the people's imaginations, especially when we are talking about the core enabling technologies."

Some 3D-printed cars, such as this Shelby Cobra, were built solely for testing purposes. Other designers say that mass production of their cars may start as soon as the next year. They expect that sales will slowly pick up as more and more people recognize the many advantages of reinforced plastic bodies and advanced propulsion.
