The Islamic State group is now in control of the famed Roman-era ruins of the ancient city of Palmyra, hours after seizing the Syrian town from government forces, according to a monitoring group.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the Islamic militants took over the 2,000 year-old UNESCO World Heritage Site late Wednesday. There are so far no reports of any damage to the ruins.

Syrian antiquities director Maamoun Abdulkarim said hundreds of statues were removed from the city ahead of the Islamic State takeover. Other artifacts were too large and could not be moved.

Syrian and U.N. officials are appealing to the world to help protect the cultural sites from Islamic State militants, who destroyed ancient artifacts inside Iraq earlier this year.

The militants pushed nearly all of the Syrian government troops out of Palmyra by late Wednesday, following a week-long siege and heavy fighting in the city's north, according to the Observatory.

State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said Wednesday U.S. officials are concerned and hope the Palmyra sites are not damaged. But she said she is unsure what more can be done at this point.

The Britain-based group said Thursday that with the latest westward advance Islamic State now controls more than half of Syrian territory. The siege of Palmyra comes just days after Islamic State fighters captured Iraq's western city of Ramadi.

The advances are calling into question the effectiveness of U.S. efforts to defeat the extremist group.

U.S. President Barack Obama on Wednesday reaffirmed his support for Iraq's prime minister and the decision to plan an operation to try to retake Ramadi, as Iraqi forces and Shi'ite militias surround the city for a potential recapture.

Islamic State seized Ramadi Sunday after several days of fighting that authorities said left 500 people dead.

Iraqi troops have since retreated east, while militias answered the call of Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to join the government forces and mass near Ramadi in an effort to try to retake the city.
