LESSON: Food - Beginner
MC: Today we’re learning some beginner words for talking about ordering
fast food.
Doug, short for Douglass, and Liz, for Elizabeth, are
going to the store to buy groceries.
But on the way there, Doug gets hungry
ທາງໄປ Doug ກໍເກີດຫິວຂຶ້ນມາ and wants to stop to get a hamburger at a fast-food restaurant.
Professor: Winnie. Do you ever get hungry when you go shopping?
MC: Of course! I always make sure to eat a big meal before I go
to the store, ຍາມໃດ ຂ້ອຍກໍເຮັດໃຫ້ແນ່ໃຈວ່າ ຂ້ອຍກິນເຂົ້າຫລາຍໆ ກ່ອນຈະໄປຮ້ານ because if I feel really hungry walking around the supermarket I will just
want to buy everything! Let’s listen to
Doug and Liz.
Doug: Hey Liz, I’m really hungry. Let’s stop and eat something.
Liz: Alright, where do you want to eat?
Doug: There is a McDonald's nearby.
Liz: Fast food is so unhealthy. But if you are really hungry, we can go through the drive-through.
Doug: No, let’s go inside. I don’t want to spill my drink in the car.
Professor: So Winnie, did you hear where Doug wants to eat?
MC: Yes, he wants to eat at McDonald's. Everybody knows McDonald's. ໃຜໆກໍຮູ້ຈັກ McDonald's. But
I’m not sure I know what a drive-through is.
drive-through ແມ່ນຫຍັງ? But I would guess it is the place where you drive through and order you food through a window, right?
Professor: Exactly! Why doesn’t Doug want to use the drive-through?
MC: He says he doesn’t want to spill his drink in the car.
Personally, I think it’s pretty dangerous to eat while you drive anyway.
Professor: That’s true. I guess there are two ways eating fast food can kill you.
MC: Right ແມ່ນແລ້ວ. If it doesn’t give you a heart attack,
ຫົວໃຈວາຍຕາຍ it will get you in a car accident!
Now let’s listen to Doug and Liz talking to the cashier.
Doug: Hey Liz, I’m really hungry. Let’s stop and eat something. Liz
Liz: Alright, where do you want to eat?
Doug: There is a McDonald's nearby.
Liz: Fast food is so unhealthy.
But if you are really hungry, we can go through the drive-through.
Doug: No, let’s go inside. I don’t want to spill my drink in the car.
Cashier: Welcome to McDonald's! May I take
your order?
Doug: Yes, I’d like two hamburgers, a large
Coke and a large fries.
Cashier: Do you want anything, mam?
Liz: No thanks, I’m on a diet.
Cashier: For here or to go?
Doug: For here.
Cashier: Alright, that will be $11.50.
MC: Well at least one of them has the good sense not to eat fast food.
Liz says she is on a diet. But if
Doug eats all that food himself he’s going to need a new wardrobe.
Professor: Yes, fast food has a lot of fat in it.
But Winnie, does Doug want the food “for here” or “to go”?
ແຕ່ວ່າ ວິນນີ່ ດັ໊ກຕ້ອງການອາຫານຢູ່ນີ່ “for here” ຫລືວ່າ “to go” ເອົາໄປນຳ?
MC: Doug asks for the food “for here,” ດັ໊ກຂໍອາຫານສຳຫລັບກິນຢູ່ນີ່ meaning that he wants to eat inside the restaurant ແປວ່າ ລາວຢາກກິນຢູ່ໃນຮ້ານ; otherwise he would ask for the food “to go” as they say in America, ບໍ່ດັ່ງນັ້ນ ລາວກໍຈະບອກວ່າ ເອົາໄປນຳ ຫລື “to go” ດັ່ງທີ່ເຂົາເຈົ້າເວົ້າກັນຢູ່ອາເມຣິກາ or “take away” as I heard them say in Australia, England, Europe and even in Laos ຫລື “take away” ດັ່ງທີ່ຂ້ອຍໄດ້ຍິນເຂົາເຈົ້າເວົ້າກັນ ຢູ່ ອອສເຕຣເລຍ ອັງກິດ
Professor: Yes. When you take food home from a restaurant, you can also say the food is for “take out.”
MC: Oh, so when you want to take food home, you can ask for it “to go”
or “for take out.”
Professor: Now Doug and Liz are eating their food. Let’s listen.
Cashier: Welcome to McDonalds! May I take your order?
Doug: Yes, I’d like two hamburgers, a large Coke and a large fries.
Cashier: Do you want anything, mam?
Liz: No thanks, I’m on a diet.
Cashier: For here or to go?
Doug: For here.
Cashier: Alright, that will be $11.50.
Doug: Do you want to eat my tomato? I don’t like them. The only topping
I like is ketchup.
Liz: Sure, I love tomatoes. They’re a healthy food.
Doug: That’s true. Are you sure you don’t want anything?
Liz: Well I know the French fries are very unhealthy, but they look so good.
Doug: Come on Liz, try one. It won’t kill you.
Liz: Well alright, I’ll have just one.
Doug: Great! I’m going to get a refill of soda.
MC: It sounds like Liz’s resolve is weakening. Even though she has been talking about how terrible fast food is, ເຖິງແມ່ນວ່າລາວໄດ້ເວົ້າວ່າ ອາຫານໄວທັນໃຈຂີ້ຮ້າຍຫລາຍປານໃດກໍຕາມ once she sees how delicious Doug’s fries look, she caves in and has one.
Professor: That’s right. And did you hear what topping Doug likes, and which one he doesn’t like?
MC: Let’s see … Doug says that the only “topping” he likes is ketchup, and he doesn’t like tomatoes. That’s pretty weird seeing as ketchup is made from tomatoes.
Professor: That’s right. What does Doug say he is going to do at the end?
MC: He says he’s going to get a “refill” on his soda. Professor, the word “refill” r-e-f-i-l-l comes from the word “fill” and it means to fill up again, right?
Professor: That’s right! When you go to a restaurant, you can ask the waiter, “Do you have free refills?” Now let’s see what Doug says when he returns to the table.
Doug: Do you want to eat my tomato? I don’t like them. The only topping I like is ketchup.
Doug: Liz, where are all my fries? Did you eat them all?
Liz: I’m sorry, Doug. They were just so good! Once I started eating them,
I couldn’t stop.
Doug: Don’t worry Liz. If I’m going to get really fat, you should get really fat too! We will look really cute together.
Liz: Wow, that is a really scary thought. I need to exercise right now!
MC: I don’t know if they will look cute if they both put on weight, ຂ້ອຍບໍ່ຮູ້ວ່າ ເຂົາເຈົ້າຈະເບິ່ງໜ້າຮັກຫລືບໍ່ ຖ້າຫາກວ່າເຂົາເຈົ້າທັງສອງອ້ວນຂຶ້ນ but I know that they won’t be healthy ແຕ່ຂ້ອຍຮູ້ໃຈວ່າ ເຂົາເຈົ້າຈະບໍ່ມີສຸຂະພາບດີ. I hope they buy some healthy food at the store.
Professor: Well listen next time to find out!
