The Ebola epidemic gripping West Africa has claimed another 106 lives, raising the overall death toll to 1,350.
The World Health Organization reported the new figures Wednesday, as officials in Liberia imposed a general quarantine on two suburbs of the capital in hopes of curbing the outbreak.
Police fired bullets and tear gas in the West Point area to disperse stone-throwing protesters, who were upset by the sudden blockade of roads in and out of their neighborhood. Witnesses say at least four people were injured.
Liberia is where 90 percent of the new deaths reported by the WHO occurred.
The WHO also reported 221 new cases of Ebola, bringing the total number of cases across Liberia, Guinea, Nigeria and Sierra Leone to just under 2,500.
Concern about the outbreak spreading further spiked over the weekend when a mob attacked an Ebola treatment center in West Point, forcing 37 patients to flee. All 37 have since been found and taken to a different facility.
In a nationwide speech late Tuesday, Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf said public disregard for the government's advice and warnings is helping the epidemic to grow.
Some Liberians have continued to treat Ebola patients at home and conduct traditional burials despite warnings these practices can expose them to the Ebola virus. The virus is transmitted through direct contact with the blood or bodily fluids of an infected person.
The outbreak has prompted the affected countries and other African nations to take additional precautions.
Nigerian Health Minister Onyebuchi Chukwu told VOA ((English to Africa)) his country is stepping up efforts to secure borders by screening travelers who visit the country.
"We need to secure our airports. We need to secure our land borders. We need to secure our seaports so, that is one strategy."
Cameroon says it has closed all of its borders with Nigeria in an effort to prevent the spread of the virus.
