Al-Qaida militants captured a key Yemeni military base in the southern city of Mukalla on Friday, after consolidating their hold on the city and taking its port.
The move came a day after they stormed a prison there and freed 300 inmates. Yemeni military officials say the militants faced little resistance in capturing the prison.
To the west, the Saudi-led coalition trying to halt the advance of Houthi Shi'ite rebels airdropped weapons to fighters battling the Houthis in the southern port city of Aden.
A coalition spokesman, General Ahmed Assiri, said the airdrop helped change the situation on the ground.
The U.N. Security Council is meeting Saturday to hold "informal" discussions about Yemen.
Residents in Aden say the Houthis withdrew Friday from one of the palaces of internationally-backed President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.
Street battles also intensified Friday in Aden, with forces loyal to Mr. Hadi trying to keep the Houthis from capturing the city, the last remaining stronghold of Hadi supporters.Coalition warplanes carried out airstrikes. Officials say at least 10 rebels were killed in the fighting.
Also Friday, the Saudi Interior Ministry said two border guards on its frontier with Yemen were killed in a cross-border shootout.
Meanwhile, Pakistan evacuated nearly 200 of its citizens from Yemen Friday as Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif traveled to Turkey for talks with the country's top leaders on the Yemen crisis.
Following discussions with Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu in Ankara, Mr. Sharif urged the parties in the Yemen conflict to find a peaceful resolution.
Pakistan has yet to decide whether to join a Saudi-led coalition that has been carrying out airstrikes for more than a week to halt the advance of Houthi Shi'ite rebels in Yemen.Largely Sunni Pakistan is a regional ally of Saudi Arabia.
The capture of Aden would mark a major setback for the Saudi-led coalition.
