At this time of year, many Americans dress in holiday-themed clothing made with red and green colored fabrics, and accessorize their outfits with Christmas tree-shaped brooches, rings, earrings and fur-trimmed Santa Claus hats. For some, outfits include gaudy sweaters with Christmas motifs, prompting so-called "Ugly Sweater" races that have become a popular winter tradition in the United States and elsewhere.

The Washington, DC suburb of Oxon Hill, Maryland held an Ugly Sweater Run on Saturday. Hundreds of people, all dressed in knitted sweaters, gathered for the event, alongside dozens of dogs also clad in sweaters.

The races through town streets and parks are between three and five kilometers long and end with a celebration, including beer and sometimes a shopping trip in search of a new sweater.

For those who prefer to stay indoors, there are ugly sweater parties and contests. The origin of the tradition is not clear, but one theory says a generation of youngsters started it about a decade or so ago to make fun of their parents.

The tradition is also observed in other countries, notably Canada and Australia.
