Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko has vowed to crush Russia-backed rebels if they break a shaky cease-fire and attack the strategic port city of Mariupol. Mr. Poroshenko says Ukrainian forces and people in Mariupol are prepared to defend the city, but not everyone agrees. VOA's Daniel Schearf reports from Mariupol.
The Ukrainian president arrived to a warm welcome in Mariupol as a shaky cease-fire with pro-Russia rebels appeared to halt their advance.
But Mr. Poroshenko acknowledged there were occasional clashes and promised Ukrainian forces would crush the separatists if they tried to invade the city.
"We refreshed the equipment. We have beefed up the national guard. But the main thing that we have is the powerful patriotic fighting spirit of Ukraine and the citizens of Mariupol. [clapping] "
But not everyone agrees they are ready to take on a rebel force believed to be backed by Russian tanks and artillery.
Mariupol's eastern checkpoint was shelled just hours after the cease-fire, and the lieutenant-colonel in command, Sergei, says they continue to be fired on every day.
He asks for America's help, saying they have only a few tanks and cannons and little support from the locals.
"If we are talking percentages, only 40 percent support us. Of that 40 percent, some support Ukraine but not openly. Of the rest, 30 percent are actively pro-Russian. The scariest thing is that the 30 percent remaining do not care under which flag they live."
Despite the attacks, President Poroshenko insists the cease-fire is working and announced rebels released 1,200 Ukrainian captives.
He says they continue to build up defense forces around Mariupol while working on a negotiated solution to the conflict involving international monitors.
"The more we increase the pressure, the more Russian troops are on our territory. If you want to have from me the most quickest way to make a stability and peace here, very simple: Withdraw foreign troops and close the border. And within a week, we find out a compromise."
People in Mariupol want the former "Roshen" chocolate-king-turned-president to find a peaceful solution.
Yula, a Mariupol real estate agent, says she is for a united Ukraine but has a message for the president.
"Maybe you should pay more attention to the people. Do what people ask you to do, because people keep fighting and it is senseless."

The commander says the Russia-backed rebels need the strategic port and its metal factory, so he expects an invasion.
If it happens, he says, he and his men will be ready to give their lives for their country.
