Shelling in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk on Thursday killed a Swiss employee of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
Western journalists in Donetsk and Russian news agencies reported that a building housing the local office of the ICRC in the center of the rebel-controlled city was hit during the shelling. The ICRC confirmed that a Swiss colleague had been killed in the barrage.
Heavy fighting was also reported Thursday in the area of the Donetsk airport, as pro-Russian separatists continued a push to retake the facility from government forces.
Ukraine's government and the pro-Russian separatists signed a cease-fire agreement on September 5, but sporadic fighting continued and has intensified this week in and around Donetsk. At least 10 people were killed Wednesday by heavy shelling in the city.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday that Ukraine can "return to unity" and ensure the development of its economy only if all its people "enjoy full rights."
Speaking at an investment forum in Moscow, Mr. Putin said everyone living in Ukraine should have full rights under international and Ukrainian law, and should not be discriminated against on the basis of what language they speak, their ethnicity, or religion.
He said that is " the only way to preserve the territorial integrity of the country."
The Reuters news agency Thursday quoted a NATO spokesman as saying that hundreds of Russian troops, including special forces, remain inside Ukraine, while around 20,000 Russian troops are still deployed near Russia's border with eastern Ukraine.
Moscow has denied sending its troops or military hardware into Ukraine, even though separatist leaders have said they were being helped by Russian soldiers who used their vacation time to battle Ukrainian troops on Ukrainian soil.
NATO reported last month that Russia had several thousand combat troops and armor inside eastern Ukraine, but later said that number had dropped significantly.
Mr. Putin also said Thursday that he hopes Ukraine's parliamentary elections, set for October 26, will be held "in a worthy manner" and that "long-awaited political stabilization" will finally come.
Pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine have said the parliamentary elections will not be held in the areas they control.
