Malaysia Airlines has formally declared the disappearance of last year's Flight MH370 to be an accident, meaning the 239 people aboard the flight are now presumed dead.
While the ruling sounds stark, after nearly a year of searching for the plane that could not be found, it has a practical effect: families of the victims may now apply to the airline for compensation.
Malaysia civil aviation chief Azharuddin Abdul Rahman made the televised announcement Thursday, saying the decision was made "with the heaviest heart and deepest sorrow." He also said the airline is ready to proceed with compensation claims immediately.
The Boeing 777 disappeared over the Indian Ocean March 8, 2014, having veered thousands of kilometers off course on a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.
The aviation chief said the investigation into the cause and location of the accident are ongoing, but with no physical evidence, particularly without the flight voice and data recorders, the searchers' capabilities are limited.
He said an interim report detailing the progress of a safety investigation should be out soon.
