New research on global arms trading shows China, with the world's second largest economy, surpassing Germany to become the world's third largest arms exporter.

A report from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute shows nearly 70 percent of those weapons sales went to Pakistan, Bangladesh and Myanmar. Beijing also supplied weaponry to 18 African nations, as its sales rose by 143 percent between 2005 and 2014.

Overall global sales rose 16 percent in the past five years.

The report shows the United States as the leading arms exporter, with sales rising by 23 percent over the past decade. U.S. sales accounted for 31 percent of all exports between 2010 and 2014, followed by Russia with 27 percent.

The study showed the five biggest importers from 2010-2014 as India, Saudi Arabia, China, the United Arab Emirates and Pakistan.

Other notable trends in the SIPRI report include European arms imports declining by 36 percent as measured between 2005-2009 and 2010-2014. Germany's arms exports decreased by 43 percent during the same period.

African arms imports were up 45 percent over the past decade, with the continent accounting for 9 percent of all arms exports as measured by volume. The report identified the three largest importers as Algeria, Morocco and Sudan.

Major deliveries to Algeria included a helicopter carrier from Italy, air defense systems from Russia and 50 self-propelled guns from China.

The report also said Nigeria and Cameroon imported weaponry to boost their fight against Boko Haram militants. That hardware included helicopters from China and Russia, and armored vehicles from China, the Czech Republic, South Africa and Ukraine.

The report said Canadian manufacturers also supplied armored vehicles to Nigeria and Cameroon from production lines in Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates.

Among global importers, the report said India far outpaced Saudi Arabia and China, purchasing about 15 percent of the total volume, despite ranking ninth in terms of total military budgets.
