Two Chinese astronauts lifted off Monday for the country's longest and most ambitious manned space mission to date.

Jing Haipeng and Chen Dong launched into space aboard the Shenzhou-11 spacecraft as dawn broke above the Jinquan Satellite Launch Center in the Gobi desert.Jing and Chen will spend the next two days in orbit before a planned rendezvous with the Tiangong-2, or "Heavenly Palace 2," space laboratory, which was placed into orbit last month.

The two men will then spend the next 30 days aboard the Tiangong-2 conducting scientific and spacecraft-related technologies in anticipation of China's permanent manned space station, which it hopes to have in place by 2022.

Jing will turn 50 years old during the mission, his third overall.

The two astronauts received a congratulatory message from President Xi Jinping, who has envisioned using the country's space program has a symbol of its status as a world power.It has conducted five previous manned missions and successfully landed a lunar probe since 2003.
