How Antiviral Drugs Work - 2004-07-06


When a person gets sick with a high temperature, muscle pain and a cough, doctors usually diagnose the sickness as influenza that is caused by a virus and prescribe antibiotics. But antibiotics are not effective against viruses. They only treat infections caused by bacteria. Now there are new kinds of medicines known as antivirals.

Four antivirals have been approved for use against influenza in the United States. They mainly fight infections in the breathing system. Each drugs has possible side effects.
