U-S marines suspend offensive operations in Fallujah--the mainly Sunni Muslim town west of Baghdad that has been under siege since Monday.

The White House says Mr. Bush nominated Patricia Haslach to become the next U-S Ambassador to Laos. Ms. Haslach currently serves as director of the U-S State Department's Office for Afghanistan Reconstruction.

A Japanese diplomat stationed in Laos is missing after crossing into northeatern Thailand, embassy officials and Thai police said Friday.

Forty-year-old Toru Teisaka, attached to the financial affairs section at the embassy in Vientiane, disappeared April 4, according to a missing persons report filed by the embassy to Thai police Wednesday.
