Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian is elected to second four-year term, after a closely-fought race with his opponent, Lien Chan, of the Nationalist party. The election took place a day after Mr. Chen and Vice President Annette Lu were shot and wounded slightly while campaigning.

President Bush marks the first anniversary of the U-S led invasion of Iraq calling on U-S allies to unite in the fight against terrorism. Speaking at the White House to diplomats of more than 80 countries, Mr. Bush said it is the "duty of every government to fight and destroy this threat."

Japan promises one-point-six-million dollars in emergency grants to four Asian nations hard-hit by the bird flu virus, including Laos.
