Laos denies reports of fightings in the US embassy travel warning issued last week, but acknowledges it has reinforced troops in the Vang Vieng area as a security precautionary measure.
In a travel advisory posted on the US embassy web site in Vientiane, the State Department last Friday warned Americans against travelling to northern Laos because of reports of fighting between government troops and unidentified groups in the Vang Vieng area.
Lao foreign ministry spokesman Yong Chanthalangsy denied the US reports but acknowledged troops reinforcement in the area as precautionary measures ahead of the Lao New Year in mid-April.
